Piano Regulation & Voicing
A piano is designed to perform to exacting standards, far beyond simply striking the right notes. Over time, wear and environmental changes cause the instrument to drift out of alignment, affecting both playability and tone. Regulation and voicing restore your piano to its intended responsiveness and sound quality.

Regulation: Restoring precision
Regulation is the process of adjusting the piano’s action so every key responds evenly and naturally. We offer both partial and full regulation depending on your piano’s needs.
Key adjustments include:
-
Lost motion correction – eliminating wasted movement in the action
-
Let-off and drop – ensuring hammers release at the right point for clarity
-
Backcheck distance – controlling hammer rebound for consistent repetition
-
Hammer-to-string distance – aligning strike point for accuracy
-
Key level and dip – balancing touch and depth across the keyboard
A full regulation is recommended every 3–5 years, while partial adjustments can be made as needed. Once completed, a full regulation typically holds for years without further intervention.

Voicing: Shaping the tone
Voicing focuses on the piano’s sound. As hammers wear, tone can become too bright or too dull. Through careful hammer shaping and needle work, we refresh the felt and tailor the instrument’s voice to its optimal quality.
-
Brightening or softening tone to match your preference
-
Evening out tonal inconsistencies across registers
-
Restoring warmth and clarity for a balanced sound
Voicing ensures your piano not only plays correctly but also sings with the richness and character you expect.
